The world’s favorite super septuplet group, Travis Japan, returned to America’s Got Talent for the AGT: Fantasy League to perform a special version of their debut song, “JUST DANCE!” specifically for the American show.
After participating in America’s Got Talent in 2022, with “My Dreamy Hollywood” as their first audition, where they made it to the semi-finals, Travis Japan has done so many things since then. Aside from signing with Capitol Records, the group has successfully, among other things, released three singles, one EP, and one album, as well as a nationwide tour.
Returning to AGT feels a little like a revenge move for the group. They want to prove to the judges and the public, not to mention their fans, that they have improved since last time. While a lot of us might say, “Of course, they have!” it might not be the same case for the hard-flirted seats of judges.
Aside from their performance, their confidence in their English conversations and communication is the biggest improvement. Member Noel Kawashima is their main speaker again, but his English level has greatly improved. There’s confidence backing his speaking up much more than the last time they were on AGT.
The way the whole group actively engages themselves on stage as the rest of the crowd and judges speak English is also heartwarming to see, as they seemed a little out of place last time. This was completely understandable as they had not been in America for long. Noel’s participation in the bickering after the performance is absolutely endearing!
Regarding the performance, Travis Japan is born to be on stage, and you can’t help but smile and vibe with the boys as they shine so brilliantly with the music. Every time they take on a stage, they leave a mark on everyone watching.
“JUST DANCE!” might not have been the ultimate choice to perform, as Travis Japan has many heavier and more impactful songs that wipe the floor with “JUST DANCE!” such as “99 PERCENT.” Even “Moving Pieces” would be more impactful to the judges. If their intention was to win, they should have picked something else. However, “JUST DANCE!” is a statement of who they are and where they came from.
Even if people say it is too corny or old-school, Travis Japan is showing us their kind of entertainment. It’s not necessarily up to the level of technique and skill most of us know Travis Japan is capable of, but by performing “JUST DANCE!” without any compromises, they stay true to their beliefs of how they want the audience to perceive them.
As someone who has seen many different sides of Travis Japan, various choreographies, and performances, this is not their strongest in the book. It does leave a sense of “what if they performed X instead…” but I guess it also leaves a bit of a feeling of “what’s next to come?“
They performed without any major issues, and maybe it was too much of a “safe choice” as well. I get that the debut song holds meaning and that, for whatever other reasons there might be, it is a choice they have made.
The performance is good and all, but to me as a fan? It lacks the authentic “This is Travis Japan” feel I want to see and feel in their performances. It doesn’t mean their performance is bad or their choice was wrong. It simply means I want more.
I want to see more. I want to experience more. I want to know more. And that is the essence of why Travis Japan charms so many people. They grab hold of you, only to bring you onto a journey and show you views you’ve never seen before. Performing “JUST DANCE!” on AGT might not be that experience, but it is certainly charming.
Do I still love it? Yes, I do! There’s so much about Travis Japan that I want everyone in the world to see, and I hope being on AGT is giving them a chance to spark that interest despite “JUST DANCE!” not being my first pick. However, that’s part of why I am writing this, too. Even if I don’t necessarily like the song choice, someone will, and I will be here to promote their other songs that I personally think showcase Travis Japan the best. I love them dearly, and I want the world to see why.
Undoubtedly, Travis Japan won the hearts of many despite not making it to the semi-finals this time. They have left people wanting to see more, to know more. After all, it doesn’t matter where you’re from or who you are. JUST DANCE!
