‘Truth’ ‘Lies’ ‘Trust’ ‘Jealousy’
When “everything” you believed in collapses, what happens to the future you wished to be in with your lover?!

The story follows the love story of a dull elementary school teacher, Ichiro Aoyama (Seiya Suezawa), who has a girlfriend, Yukika Sasaki (Nagisa Sekimizu), who is the most important person in the world to him. She is so incredibly cute that he thinks she is “wasted on him”! She is the first person to affirm his existence and to love him wholeheartedly. A person who also overwrites the “unpleasant reality” with a happy cohabitation life, undoubtedly this is the peak of life! However, one day when he tried out a friend’s invention ‘a VR machine to look into the past’, he learns about the past of his beloved Yukika, which makes him disbelieve in his own eyes.

A Sci-Fi Infused Love Story with a Darker Twist
Craving a fresh take on the romance genre? “Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai” (A bright future for her and her boyfriend) might be the perfect blend of love story and science fiction for you, especially if you like it when it takes a darker turn. This recently premiered drama (January-February 2024) injects a unique twist by exploring the complexities of love through a futuristic lens – specifically a VR lens.
At first glance, Ichiro’s and Yukika’s relationship seems to be absolutely picture-perfect and too good to be true. While he might be a borderline good-for-nothing guy, Ichiro treasures Yukika more than anything in the world. After all, she’s the first to see him for who he is and love him wholeheartedly.
Their lives go on as usual until the day when Ichiro gets to try out a VR headset that somehow allows you to revisit the past. The lingering question is: would you want to see the past? Especially the past of your most important person?
Not everything is as perfect as it seems
“Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai” starts out seemingly innocent and heartfelt, emphasizing the relationship between Yukika and Ichiro as something to aim for. But it takes a turn quickly from the usual romance dramas, as it focuses on the past and the complexity of human relationships rather than falling in love and aiming for happiness.
Ichiro found his happiness already in Yukika, and while it’s easier to look down on and accept the darker sides of yourself, doing so for another person is different.
In exploring the complexities of human relationships and the nuances of self-acceptance, the narrative of Ichiro and Yukika opens a thought-provoking dialogue about the intricacies of love and personal growth.
The storyline not only delves into the individual struggle for self-acceptance but also beautifully illustrates the unique challenges that arise when accepting and embracing the imperfections of another person.
This portrayal might resonate deeply with audiences, serving as a reflective mirror to the multifaceted dynamics of contemporary society, where idealized notions of relationships are often shattered by the reality of human imperfection.
The narrative’s candid approach acts as a powerful catalyst for introspection, inviting viewers to consider and empathize with the complexities of the characters’ experiences and, in turn, their own.
The narrative’s significance lies in its ability to foster a deeper understanding of the human condition, encouraging viewers to contemplate the complexities of love, self-discovery, and societal expectations.
Through its authentic portrayal of imperfect yet profound connections, the story of Ichiro and Yukika serves as a compelling reflection of the contemporary landscape of relationships, resonating with audiences on a profound and introspective level.
A bright future?
While we know that Ichiro is far from perfect, we also perceive Yukika as “close to perfect.” Even if Yukika herself struggles with her own issues, some of which Ichiro is not even aware of.
This infusion of VR technology within the romantic storyline adds a layer of modernity and intrigue, captivating audiences with its potential to reshape the perceptions of love and connection.
The narrative explores a spectrum of emotions by immersing the characters and viewers in a realm between past and present, shedding light on the delicate intricacies of love, trust, and vulnerability.
As the plot unfolds, it tantalizingly unveils the intricate web of human relationships, deftly intertwining the past and the present to create a multidimensional tapestry of love, desire, and introspection.
This approach promises to offer a thought-provoking exploration of the ways in which our past shapes our present and future interactions, inviting viewers to ponder the intertwined nature of memory, perception, and emotional growth.
Seiya Suezawa truly shines in portraying the character of Ichiro in the drama. Throughout the seven episodes, he skillfully captures all the complex emotions and experiences of Ichiro’s journey. Most of the time, though, he is downright adorable as Ichiro, and so far, no one hasn’t wanted him as their boyfriend! Everyone wants an Ichiro in their lives!
What’s remarkable is how the character evolves from the first episode to the last, yet maintains a consistent essence. Seiya’s attention to detail and deep immersion in the role are the highlights of his performance. As a viewer, you are completely drawn into the character, to the extent that you forget that he isn’t actually Ichiro. His portrayal is so convincing that it blurs the line between reality and fiction, making the viewing experience truly captivating.
There’s something magical about watching Seiya act, and watching him in general. He has an incredible aura that draws you in, no matter who you are, and just like he commands the stage when he stands on it in the spotlight, he does the same in his acting. At the same time, he easily disappears into the crowd when needed. The presence of Seiya Suezawa is a force to be reckoned with, and once you’ve seen him, you can’t forget him.
What to Consider Before Diving In
“Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai” takes its time with the storyline, each episode not rushing through. Additionally, the show’s genre-bending nature might require some adjustment for viewers accustomed to purely romantic storylines. There are some elements in the show that might also be triggering for some viewers.
“Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai” dives into the realm of an established romance and how a small ripple in your ordinary day can end up in a storm of events. Maybe things are supposed to always stay the way they are, maybe they aren’t.
If you’re a fan of traditional romance dramas, where characters work hard and do everything out of love and “love conquers all,” this drama might not be for you. However, for those who enjoy shows that push boundaries and creatively blend genres, “Kanojo to Kareshi no Akarui Mirai” could be a delightful surprise.
Ultimately, love is more than the experiences you create as you enter a relationship and grow together. It’s also about embracing the past and weaving it with the present to ensure that the doors to the future can be opened.
