The revival of the Broadway musical “Newsies,” which premiered in Japan in 2021 and won the 29th Yomiuri Theater Award for Best Production, has been a significant milestone for both the Japanese theater scene and the global reach of this beloved musical.

Comment by Taisho Iwasaki
“I’m Taisho Iwasaki, playing the role of Jack. I feel incredibly honored to be entrusted with this role in the same production that my senior, Kyomoto (Taiga)-kun, portrayed before.
When I watched the show as an audience member, I never imagined that one day I would be playing the role of Jack myself. Now that it has become a reality, I am filled with both joy and nervousness about taking on the lead role.
I will put all my strength into it to deliver a wonderful performance to everyone.”
Deriving from the film penned by Bob Tzudiker and Noni White, the initial Broadway rendition, brought to life by Disney Theatrical Group, secured an impressive eight Tony Award nominations, ultimately seizing two wins. Additionally, it earned six Drama Desk Award nominations, triumphing in two categories. Story
In the summer of 1899, in New York City, a boy named Jack (played by Taisho Iwasaki) lives with his friend Crutchy, who has a disability, along with other orphaned and homeless newsboys known as the “Newsies,” selling newspapers every day to make a living.
Jack dreams of leaving New York and going to Santa Fe someday, but the reality is a day-to-day struggle.
One day, Jack meets Davey and his younger brother Les. Unlike the other Newsies, Davey and Les have a home and family, but due to their father’s unemployment, they have recently joined the Newsies. Jack sees an opportunity to sell more newspapers by using young Les and decides to cooperate.
Meanwhile, the owner of “The World” newspaper, Pulitzer, plans to increase the wholesale price of newspapers for the Newsies while keeping the selling price the same, aiming to make more profit than other competitors.
As Jack, Davey, and Les stick together, Jack finds himself pursued by Snyder, an official from the juvenile detention center, due to events from the past. Seeking refuge, they end up in Medda’s theater, where a splendid show is staged that day.
The next morning, Jack learns that the wholesale price per 100 newspapers has increased from 50 cents to 60 cents, prompting him to lead the Newsies in a strike to protect their livelihoods and rights. Newspaper reporter Katherine is moved by Jack’s determination and decides to pursue the strike for coverage.
Will the powerful Pulitzer prevail, or will it be the young Newsies fighting for their rights? What awaits the future of these boys who are striving to live in the present?
