World-renowned koto artist KOTOMEN (Yoshiaki Okawa) is heading to Sweden this summer for a special appearance at NärCon Summer 2025—his first ever in the Nordics.

Born in Fukushima in 1995, Okawa began playing the koto, a traditional Japanese string instrument with over 1,300 years of history, at a young age. In the wake of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, music became his anchor—a way to heal, grow, and eventually reach audiences far beyond Japan’s borders.
Known online as KOTOMEN (a fusion of koto + men), he’s now become one of the most prominent and innovative koto players of his generation, blending old and new with artistry that speaks directly to the heart.
Beyond his musical prowess, KOTOMEN is renowned for his self-designed costumes that add a visual dimension to his performances. His unique style and engaging stage presence have garnered over 100 million views on social media platforms, making him a prominent figure in the world of traditional Japanese music.
KOTOMEN’s artistry transcends borders. His innovative approach combines traditional koto melodies with contemporary elements, captivating audiences worldwide. He has performed in over five countries, including a notable concert in Madrid, Spain, where he showcased both traditional and original compositions.
His Madrid performance, held earlier this month as part of the “21 Distritos” program and in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Spain, was more than a concert—it was an act of cultural connection. “The sound of the koto transcends language,” KOTOMEN shared in an interview. “I want to give European audiences a moment to feel Japan and share the joy of connecting through music.”
Audience reactions were overwhelming—some were moved to tears, while others marveled at how such a traditional instrument could feel so alive, so current. Whether performing classical Japanese compositions, pop covers, or his own original pieces, KOTOMEN brings fresh vitality to the instrument through not only sound, but style. As a trained costume designer, he creates his own visual aesthetic for each performance—making every concert a complete experience for the eyes and ears.
Having received the highest national recognition in his field, including first place and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award, KOTOMEN is more than just a musician—he’s a modern ambassador for Japanese culture. His work in the anime One Piece: Wano Kuni Arc brought the sound of the koto to one of the most beloved anime of all time, and his videos have since accumulated over 100 million views online.
Now, he’s bringing that same spirit to Sweden.
