The iconic Tetsuko Kuroyanagi, now 90, is set to star in the stage adaptation of “Harold and Maude,” a charming and unconventional love story. The production will premiere at Tokyo’s EX THEATER ROPPONGI on September 26th and move to Osaka’s Morinomiya Piloti Hall on October 17th. Kuroyanagi will play the 79-year-old Maude, and Sou Matsushima of timelesz will take on the role of the 19-year-old Harold, marking an age gap of 64 years between the two characters they portray.

Originally released as a film in 1971, “Harold and Maude” tells the story of an unusual romance between a young man and an elderly woman. The stage adaptation maintains the film’s black humor while exploring themes of love and the joy of living through a comedic lens.
Kuroyanagi, who first saw the play during a 1977 performance in Japan, has long dreamed of starring in it. She realized this dream in 2020 and has since made it a recurring part of her acting repertoire. This upcoming performance will be her fifth time bringing Maude to life on stage.
A New Harold for a New Season
Following in the footsteps of previous actors like Toma Ikuta (2020), Ryusei Fujii (2021), Shori Sato (2022), and Koji Mukai (2023), Sou will now create his unique interpretation of Harold. The cast also features Mai Fukagawa, Shigenori Yamazaki, Mitsuru Hirata, and Yuka Itaya, who will support the lead characters’ journey and romance.
The script and direction are by G2, a seasoned playwright and director renowned for his work on numerous stage productions. He crafted a new script specifically for this reading drama in 2020, incorporating elaborate stage sets, costumes, lighting, and live piano music to create a captivating experience.
Sou Matsushima’s comment
“I first encountered the charm of ‘reading drama’ when I watched my fellow member, Shori Sato, perform as the third Harold. I was fascinated by this genre I had never experienced before and dreamed of trying it myself. To have this dream come true so soon fills me with surprise and joy. I’m eagerly looking forward to sharing this imaginative experience with everyone.

The character of Harold, though eccentric at first glance, resonated with me in an unexpected way. As I read the script, I found myself identifying with him, sensing a connection to his emotions and perspective. I aim to portray Harold and Maude’s relationship with sensitivity and depth, honoring their unique bond.
This play, though a comedy, also brings tears. It’s a heartwarming story that blends laughter and emotion in a new, touching way. It’s my first attempt at a reading drama, and I’m honored to work alongside the wonderful cast, including Kuroyanagi-san, and to reunite with the director G2, who has previously guided me. I approach this role with a sense of mission and dedication. Please join us this autumn for a heartfelt narrative that promises to touch your hearts.”

“Harold and Maude” is not just a story of romance across ages but a celebration of life’s peculiarities and joys. With Kuroyanagi’s enduring charm and Sou’s fresh take on Harold, this production is set to be a poignant, entertaining, and unforgettable experience.
