King & Prince on the Big Screen: Why STARRING is the Duo’s Most Ambitious Concept Album
24 December is marked in red on the calendar for Tiaras. King & Prince is preparing to release their seventh album, STARRING. More than just a compilation of songs, this album has been conceived from scratch by the members themselves as a “conceptual work” with cinema as its central theme. But adding to the already high expectations for this cinematic audiovisual experience is the revelation of a list of collaborators that combines musical prestige with the most entertaining and viral surprise on Japanese television.
With the simultaneous release of the tracklists and the figures behind each composition, the STARRING project has established itself as a testament to King & Prince‘s growing artistic vision, demonstrating their ability to navigate between respect for pop tradition and the audacity to break expectations with just the right touch of humour.
The 50TA Phenomenon: From TV Joker to King & Prince’s “Head of the Melody Factory”
The most unexpected collaboration, which has dominated conversations on social media, is the participation of 50TA, the acclaimed musical alter ego of comedian Eiko Kano. What began as a joke on the iconic variety show London Hearts has materialised into an official song for one of the most important groups of the moment.
It all started with a direct request from King & Prince to Atsushi Tamura, the show’s presenter. Ren and Kaito, recognising 50TA‘s unique talent for creating catchy, energetic melodies, made him a composition offer. However, given 50TA‘s history of pranks and “hidden cameras” on the show, the London Hearts team decided to implement a “reverse engineering” strategy to protect him from pressure and possible paranoia.
The project was presented to 50TA as a songwriting request for a fictional virtual idol group called KPDY. Despite the caution, old wounds from past pranks resurfaced, and the comedian admitted to feeling insecure, confessing that he “can’t just be happy like before.” However, once the “Head of the Melody Factory” (as he is known) got to work, he proved why he is a phenomenon. His talent for creating melodies, a skill even his detractors must admit, was more than intact.
The result of their efforts was “希望の丘/Kibou no Oka” (Hill of Hope), a song that is pure 50TA: an energetic track that maintains their characteristic style, but which, surprisingly, fit perfectly with King & Prince‘s musical concept.
The big reveal and culmination of the project came when Kaito and Ren appeared to perform the song. The members of the duo were full of praise. Ren, who had specifically requested a “call and response” song to interact with the audience, said, “When I heard the finished song, I realised it was a perfect piece, which had the flavour of 50TA but also fit with the current King & Prince.” Ren was so enthusiastic that he told the audience he wanted everyone to shout “Itadakimasu!” (a Japanese expression used before eating, which in this context is a shout of energy and gratitude, something like: “I gratefully receive what you are giving me“) in response, anticipating its potential at concerts.
Kaito echoed the sentiment, praising 50TA for its unique power: “50TA’s music and lyrics have the power to make everyone happy, to fill us with energy and smiles. The song exudes happiness from angles I would never have imagined.” This collaboration, which was born on television, has become the most unexpected and moving bridge between popular humour and top-tier J-Pop.
Musical Seriousness: The Heavyweight of Ikimonogakari and the Talent of eill
While the inclusion of 50TA ensures virality and a touch of light-hearted optimism, the rest of the list of collaborators guarantees the album’s musical depth and solidity. King & Prince has recruited one of the most respected figures in J-Pop of the last two decades: Yoshiki Mizuno.
Mizuno is the leader and main songwriter of Ikimonogakari, the band that has defined Japanese pop music with emotional anthems and ballads that have sold millions of copies. His participation in STARRING with the song “shigatsu tsuitachi/4 月 1日” (1 April) is a strategic move that promises to give the album a melodic and lyrical resonance of the highest calibre. His ability to write universal melodies and introspective lyrics is an invaluable addition to the duo’s repertoire.
On the other hand, the album reinforces its contemporary sensibility with the participation of singer-songwriter eill. Known for her powerful voice and style that fuses R&B, pop, and soul, eill was responsible for composing Ren‘s solo trac: “Darling.” When the album preview was released, this particular song generated an intense reaction, with fans commenting that the short duration of the snippet was “too short and painful,” a clear indicator that eill‘s composition captured a nuance of melancholy and beauty that left the audience wanting more. The chemistry between eill‘s production and Ren‘s vocals promises to be one of the highest and most emotional points of STARRING.
An All-Star Cast in Production and Artistic Growth
The production team doesn’t stop at these big names, the album also features regular collaborators and emerging figures from the global music scene:
Ayumu Imazu, who previously worked with King & Prince on “moooove!!“, takes on a triple role in the title track, “Theater.” Imazu was not only responsible for the lyrics and composition, but also for the choreography. Described as a dance piece that blends funk with modern melodic lines, this song is designed to be the perfect overture, setting the vibrant and spectacular tone that the cinematic concept requires.
The producer trio BBY NABE, Matt Cab, and MATZ, known for their work on the duo’s recent tracks such as “I Know” and “SPOTLIGHT,” return to contribute to “MEET CUTE.“
Ryoto Ohara of the band Tempalay makes his second contribution to de duo with the track “Dandan.“

But STARRING is not just a showcase for external talent; it is a demonstration of King & Prince‘s personal growth as artists. Kaito himself has taken a fundamental step forward by taking control of his own creations. The artist has taken on the roles of lyricist and composer for “Sunset” and his solo track, “this time,” offering a deeply personal and unfiltered vision of his artistic expression. This level of involvement in the creative process validates the duo’s commitment to their musical evolution and ensures that the album is an authentic reflection of their current stage.
The Cinematic Concept: An “End-to-End” Experience

The concept of STARRING is undoubtedly the backbone of the entire project. By focusing on cinema, King & Prince aims to make the album feel like a film, with each song acting as a scene or act. This conceptual structure elevates the listening experience, inviting fans not only to enjoy the melodies, but to follow a narrative, an emotional and thematic journey.
From the vibrant funk of “Theater” to the pop sensibility of “shigatsu tsuitachi” and the energy of “Kibou no Oka,” the diversity of genres and collaborators makes sense within the cinematic metaphor. A film album needs a soundtrack that covers all moods: action, romance, comedy, and introspection. Contributions from 50TA (comedy/energy), Mizuno (emotion/ballad) and eill (sensibility/romance) between others build a cast of composers as diverse as a major Hollywood production.
The promise that STARRING can be enjoyed not only on an auditory level but also visually, with music videos and bonus material that align with the big screen theme, reinforces the idea that this is not just a simple release, but an event in Japanese pop culture.
A Masterpiece of High Quality and Sense of Humour
King & Prince‘s album STARRING, released on Christmas Eve, is a statement of intent. The duo has shown impressive maturity in curating a tracklist that satisfies both the most discerning music critic and the audience seeking pure entertainment. They have fused the melodic genius of a legend like Mizuno, the sophistication of indie artists like eill, their own emerging talent as songwriters, and, brilliantly, the infectious optimism of 50TA.
This album is proof that high-level J-Pop can be bold, diverse, and, above all, incredibly fun. Expectations are high, and with the promise of a complete cinematic experience, STARRING is set to leave an indelible mark on King & Prince‘s discography, proving that Ren and Kaito are truly the stars of the show.
