Live Report: Ae! group Debut Tour The World’s Best AeLIVE: A Beginning

Based on the original live report written by Sabina posted on Genius.

Ae! group’s 2024 tour was named “Debut Tour The World’s Best AeLIVE,” and it certainly lived up to its name. The word “debut” holds a significant meaning to the group and all the fans.

Last year, the group stood in the neighboring venue, Tokyo Garden Theatre, and performed in front of equally eager fans, however, the difference between the shows is not the size of the venue or the amount of fans attending. Nor is it the setlist of songs they perform.

This year, they have made their CD debut.

On May 15th, Ae! group released their long-awaited debut single “《A》BEGINNING”, and just like the name of the single, this tour symbolized a new chapter for the group—a beginning, a starting point that would propel them further into the hearts of their fans and the world beyond.

From the moment I left Tokyo Garden Theater last year at their 2023 tour, I knew that I wanted to go again. I made it a personal goal to make sure I could go to their 2024 tour. Little did I know that it would be their debut tour and that it would be beyond Ae!mazing.

2024 has been a whirlwind of emotions but at the heart of it, the success of the five of them—Seiya Suezawa, Yoshinori Masakado, Keita Richard Kusama, Ken Kojima, and Masaya Sano—burned stronger than ever before.

Standing outside the arena in the Japanese summer heat was a feat on its own, and waving our decorated uchiwas did not help much. What was hotter than the sun was the excitement that everyone felt for the show.

As the lights dimmed, it wasn’t just the excitement of witnessing their performances that filled the air; it was the culmination of the group’s journey thus far, their first tour after releasing their long-awaited CD debut.

Some had already been to previous shows since the tour started and knew what to expect from the setlist, but the excitement wasn’t any different. Any Ae! group show is worth going multiple times to if given the chance.

Penlights painted the venue in a multitude of colors, all representing the love they have for their favorite member, and together the ocean was proof of the support and love we all shared for the group. With each chant of their name, our heartbeats beat louder.

The opening VTR that flickered onto the giant screens set the tone for the night. In the video, the members are seen running from masked figures, creating a sense of mystery and urgency. As they reunited and escaped together, a metaphor for their resilience as a group, Yoshinori threw a lighter toward the camera, igniting the building they had just fled. The flames on the screen were mirrored by the explosive opening chords of “Firebird,” sending the audience into a frenzy.

Ae! group emerged from the shadows like phoenixes rising from the ashes, taking the stage with fiery intensity. Dressed in sleek, black, shimmering outfits that exuded both elegance and power, they commanded the arena from the very first moment. The pyrotechnics matched the soaring energy of the song, and as Seiya’s voice rang out with his iconic line, “I’ll turn up the heat”/”熱くしてやるよ,” the audience erupted into cheers.

There’s something magical about that line. It doesn’t matter how many times you hear it, it still sends shivers down your spine. That’s the magic of Seiya, larger than life presence and the ability to captivate you in an instance.

Starting out with “Firebird” was a great way to start the concert, not only for its catchy melody and tempo but because it is also their first-ever original song of theirs. In a way, it felt like this opening was truly a beginning.

Ae! group has mastered the balance between their vocal skills and their dance skills. Where some groups focus on either, Ae! group does not brand themselves as a “dance or vocal group,” but rather a group that takes pride in their individuality.

Whether it is the synchronized choreography and captivating rap parts in “Aeteodoru,” or the infectious high-energy and joy from “Aa‼!!!!,” Ae! group brings out the best of each other and puts on the best performance every time. They deliver what they take pride in, and that’s their entertainment they want us to enjoy and support.

The members’ smiles as they dashed along the pathways and interacted with fans were shining so bright, spreading joy to every corner of the venue. You could see how much they enjoyed seeing every fan in the audience as well, and this gratitude and appreciation is something that makes the group so lovable.

“+YOU” brought a wave of happiness to the audience, as it also serves as the theme song for the TV show Saturday Plus, which Yoshinori regularly appears on. The song immediately woke you up with its fresh and happy tunes, making the whole arena feel like they were part of a joyous celebration, not just watching a performance.

But then, the atmosphere shifted, becoming darker, and more intimate. “Junjou Pathfinder” turned the stage into a sultry, mature setting, where the group’s smooth vocals and hypnotic choreography captivated the crowd.

Richard’s rap in the second verse added a layer of seduction, his husky voice drawing everyone in, while the choreography was sleek, sharp, and undeniably alluring.

The performance highlighted Ae! group’s versatility, showing that they could effortlessly transition from playful idols to mature performers with charisma that left fans spellbound.

Then came the performance that took things to another level entirely: “Party-Aholic.” Also one of their Junior-era songs, the song has been popular for years among fans for its level of fanservice and alluring undertones and is to be included in the second single.

Being one of the first songs that introduced me to Ae! group, I was looking forward to see it live once again, not only to satisfy my inner fangirl but to see how they could top their performance from last year. Oh boy, they did it.

With a fast-beating heart, I watched in anticipation how the arena was transformed into a tantalizingly intimate space, where the members, seated on large boxes, exuded confidence and sensuality. Dressed in white shirts and black pants, they slowly opened their shirts as the song went on, teasing the audience with every move. If “Junjou Pathfinder” was the first meeting at the bar, “Party-Aholic” was the height of the night where the music was the only thing surrounding you and the group.

The performance was accompanied by a black-and-white video playing in the background, with close-up shots of the members acting seductively for the camera, feeding our fantasies and delusions.

Each member oozed charisma, but it was hard for me to keep my eyes off Yoshinori. Seated in the center of the main stage, with the members closing in on him, it created the perfect setting of a “you can watch but not touch” feel, and indeed, I watched. Intensely. Respectfully.

Once again, our uchiwas did not do any good to help against the scorching heat coming from the stage during this performance.

The performance ended with a close-up of a different member in each show, giving fans even more reason to attend multiple shows. To my delight, the member of the night was Yoshinori, and I am sure I let out some utterly incoherent sound at the sight of him wiping his lipstick off his lips with his shirt open.

Party-Aholic” played into every fan’s fantasy, blending Ae! group’s magnetic stage presence with just the right amount of suggestive flair to leave everyone craving more. At the end of the song, I finally let out a breath that I didn’t know I was holding, and my heart was still racing.

The carefree, fun vibe with the “Ae! LAND” segment was a refreshing contrast to the earlier sultry performances, reminding everyone that Ae! group can effortlessly switch between moods and styles, never missing a beat.

Then came one of the most heartwarming moments of the night, their new song—”Aishiteru-tte Iwa Night“—written by Ken with music composed by Masaya. Masaya eagerly led the performance, dressed as a knight on a toy horse, much to the delight of the audience.

Let’s be real, this is what to expect when it comes to Masaya. The tallest but youngest of the group comes in a complete package of humor, talent, and adorableness. His wide, bright smile heals your heart and soul and one can’t help but absolutely adore Masaya, even if you might shake your head and question what goes through his head sometimes.

The whimsical nature of the song allowed the group to show off their charming, humorous side, and the fans eagerly joined in for the call-and-response of “Aishiteru” (I love you) and other call-and-response parts. The entire arena echoed with love as the penlights waved in unison, creating another magical moment of connection between the group and their fans. It was a perfect blend of humor and warmth, and the fans’ laughter and cheers filled the air.

Comedy has always been one of the parts of Ae! group that I have come to love dearly. It’s something that seemingly comes naturally to them, given their close bonds with each other and they have this magical ability to make you laugh with them, rather than at them.

This comedic brilliance is not limited to the ridiculousness that Masaya often presents, but also through Ken’s genius when it comes to coming up with skits and comedy. The beloved character Ken-chan made a comeback, and we all got to witness him play games with the rest of the members. Whether it be a game of musical chairs or jump rope, his ability to bring out the best smiles of the audience and his fellow members is unrivaled.

One of the portions of the concert that struck me emotionally the most was the acoustic version of “Story!” As the members sat on stage with their instruments, the mood shifted to one of intimacy and reflection. Masaya, who had written the song for their stage play Gachi de Neverending na Story!, led the group in a beautiful, stripped-down arrangement, with Yoshinori and Seiya joining on acoustic guitar, Ken on keyboard and Richard on saxophone.

It was breathtaking seeing the five of them play their instruments together so openly, letting everyone see the innermost parts of their souls. Richard’s saxophone playing got a chance to shine, often hidden in their band arrangements, and it really enhanced the heartwarming moment.

“Even if you can’t find the little happy things in life quite still
As long as you keep smiling by my side
that’s all that matters.”

Before they started the performance, they guided the audience to sing-along with them, creating a moment of unity between the group and their fans. It was a reminder of the small, precious moments in life that we should cherish and notice, just like the lyrics speak of.

Gachi de Neverending na Story! was the first Ae! group live I ever attended in person, and the start of my descent into the group. Last year, it was also an emotional moment, but this year it felt even closer to the heart. A wave of pride and gratitude welled up inside me as I watched them perform, and I had promised myself to not get too emotional during the show. But the moment they started singing, the dam broke, and my tears were free falling. Thank heavens for waterproof makeup!

The emotion carried into “Shiawasemon.,” a song that perfectly captured the deep gratitude Ae! group feels toward their fans. The platforms the members stood on slowly rose, lifting them above the crowd, symbolizing the heights they’ve reached together.

The song’s title, which roughly translates to “(a) fortunate person,” with an emphasis on that “something“/”someone” is the reason behind it, perfectly encapsulates its essence.

The members’ vocals evoke a sense of nostalgia and comfort, making listeners feel like they are surrounded by good company. The song makes you feel like you’re hand-in-hand with the members, walking down a path together, and it is only emphasized by the way the members made sure to look into the eyes of their fans as they sang.

“Yeah, after all
I know that you’re far more important
Than wealth or fame
That’s why I can stand up again today”

Masaya’s bridge in the song filled the arena with emotion, followed by Seiya’s powerful vocals that brought the song to its emotional peak.

The backdrop of group photos played on the screen at the end of the song, highlighted the journey the group and their fans have taken together. Fans sang along to the final chorus, their voices blending with the group’s in a moment that felt like the culmination of all the love and support they’ve shared over the years.

Despite the hardships they have faced until now, Ae! group has ensured that, no matter what, the fans who love them dearly get rewarded a thousandfold. To them, the fans are the reason why they have continued running forward, even when their hands trembled anxiously, even when the future was unsure.

Because they have their fans, they can continue on. Because we’re here, they have become stronger and can overcome any wall they may face.

Just like they can sing “Shiawasemon.” to us as their gratitude and message, the same can apply to the fans. How many times have their unchanging smiles saved us? A simple “Thank you” is definitely not enough to express what Ae! group has done for all fans. It’s truly remarkable how their music and energy have brought joy and inspiration to countless individuals worldwide.

It wasn’t just a performance—it was a moment of gratitude, of reflection, of love. It felt like a thank you from Ae! group to all of us, and it was impossible not to feel incredibly fortunate to be part of their journey.

Following the ballad, a VTR served as a bridge between the past and the future, tying together the themes of the night with the group’s debut. The video continued the narrative introduced at the start of the concert, showing the members walking toward the light, a metaphor for their journey toward debut. The video was a poignant reflection of the moments of doubt and confusion they’ve experienced, as we see them in separate shots, stuck in mirrors, unsure where to go or what to do.

Yet, as the video progressed, they broke through the confusion, and their paths converged as they walked together toward the light. This imagery was powerful, representing the unity and strength they’ve found in each other as they step into the unknown together, embracing a beginning.

This emotional buildup led seamlessly into the performance of “《A》BEGINNING,” the song that marked their official debut. The energy was at its max as the group took the stage, their voices strong and clear, heralding a new era for Ae! group.

From the first note, it feels like an anthem of triumph, a bold statement that says, “We made it.”

The song, with its commanding presence and powerful harmonies, encapsulated everything the concert had been leading up to—a statement of arrival, of resilience, and of a future filled with promise.

The fireworks that accompanied the performance were a visual representation of the group’s explosive impact, while Seiya’s impressive high notes soared above the crowd. This performance wasn’t just about the song—it was about everything Ae! group stands for, their journey, their struggles, and their triumphs.

When the arena was filled with the opening of “PRIDE,” I felt a rush of adrenaline through me. “PRIDE” is my all-time favorite song of Ae! group, and each performance they do is simply out of the world.

This song has become synonymous with Ae! group’s identity—representing their struggles, perseverance, and success.

Another wave of pride ran through me as I watched Richard play the bass during “PRIDE” and all the other band songs they performed that night. His solo section where he opened the band segment by playing bass in the middle of the arena is still vivid in my mind. It takes more than just courage to stand alone like he did and bare himself to the crowd. The whole arena turned into a yellow sea for him, and words of support and his name echoed as we watched him carefully pick up his bass.

Throughout the song, Seiya’s high toned voice soared above the arena, and seriously? What is Seiya not capable of? This man makes me jealous of him and proud of him at the same time.

Yoshinori’s guitar solo electrified the crowd, and if there’s something that is absolutely breathtaking (aside from watching Seiya stand on stage) to watch, it is watching Yoshinori play guitar on stage. The extraordinary stage presence he has when he plays his beloved guitar is beyond surreal and magical. Seeing him play so passionately and confidently makes you instantly fall in love with the genuine enthusiasm and passion he has for the instrument. There are many sides of Yoshinori to love, but his guitar-playing side is one of the best.

The performance was a declaration of everything Ae! group stands for—their journey, their passion, and their pride. Every member poured their heart and soul into the song, and the fans responded with thunderous cheers. “PRIDE” wasn’t just a song—it was an anthem, a powerful reminder of everything the group has overcome and everything they’ve achieved.

Boku Blues” was the emotional heart of the night, the perfect song to bring the concert to its deeply reflective close. Written by Masaya, with lyrics by Ken, it carries a weight of vulnerability and raw honesty that made the entire arena feel hushed and intimate. This was another moment where I felt deeply connected to the journey I had taken with the group since I first got to know them.

“It’s okay, take it slow,
Go forward, let’s go forward”

As the first notes played, you could feel a shift in the atmosphere—a collective moment of stillness, everyone holding their breath to the piano intro as the stage turned into starry sky. This wasn’t just a song; it was a story, a message from Ae! group to their fans.

The song itself tells the tale of their journey, the struggles, the setbacks, and the unwavering hope that pushes them forward.

Each lyric was like a window into their hearts, revealing the hardships they’ve faced and their determination to keep going, even when the road gets tough. The pain and perseverance reflected in the lyrics resonated deeply with everyone in the audience.

Every time they sing this song, it feels as if Ae! group is laying everything bare, letting us in on their struggles but also giving us the strength to believe that things will get better.

It was a heartfelt promise from Ae! group to their fans: no matter how difficult the path might get, they would continue forward, and they would carry us with them.

The emotional delivery in this song was incredible, capturing the weight of their emotions, but also the hope that underpins it. Their vocals carried a quiet strength, and when combined with Ken’s lyrics, it created something truly magical. There was a sense of solace in their voices, a reassurance that even if the world betrays you, Ae! group is there, continuing to fight.

Their upcoming second single “Gotta Be was a vibrant burst of energy that completely elevated the atmosphere during the encore. The second it began, the entire arena lit up with excitement, as it was the first performance ever of the song.

This song has an infectious, anime-opening-like energy that immediately gets your heart racing and your feet tapping. It’s one of those tracks that fills you with hope, excitement, and a sense of endless possibilities.

The performance of “Gotta Be” felt like a celebration—not just of the group’s journey, but of their future.

If “《A》BEGINNING” said “We did it,” “Gotta Be” said, “We’re just getting started.

As the final bows were taken and the lights dimmed for the last time, there was a profound sense of emotion in the air. Ae! group’sDebut Tour The World’s Best AeLIVE” wasn’t just a concert—it was an emotional, powerful, and unforgettable experience.

It was a night filled with love, joy, laughter, and tears—a night that celebrated not just the music, but the deep bond between Ae! group and their fans. And as the fans began to file out of the arena, there was one shared sentiment on everyone’s mind: Ae! group is just getting started.

Ae! group will become a group loved by many—a group that moves—and challenge themselves to expand throughout Japan and the world. They will not be limited by their own borders, allowing them to overcome anything and be a borderless group.

As I slowly go forward, I go with pride, knowing that I’m so fortunate to be a part of this group of five talented who will continue their adventure and resonate with the world.
