“Try This One More Time” is the coupling song from Sexy Zone’s 24th single “Honne to Tatemae” (本音と建前), released on September 20, 2023. It is also the theme song for the Japanese dubbed version of the film “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.” Sexy Zone‘s member, Nakajima Kento, takes on his first voice acting job as the Japanese dubbed voice of Noah.
As the film is set in 1994, the song incorporates stylish 90s hip-hop tunes and rap and includes images from the film and the animated version of Beast Wars. The lyrics and beat also pay tribute to the original Japanese Beast Wars theme “WAR! WAR! STOP IT!“. Listening to the song invokes feelings of battles, where you’re fighting for more than just pride and glory.
Sexy Zone manages to bring out the best in every song they do, and “Try This One More Time” is no exception. The raw aura they emit once the camera is on draws you in and you can’t help but be completely captivated until the end. On top of stunning visuals, the group’s vocal color is the cherry on top. The range from Kikuchi Fuma‘s brash but unique voice to Matsushima Sou’s softer and alluring one makes the song come together. It’s what you can expect from a group going strong for 12 years.
Each member gets a chance to shine in the song, and Kento’s strong opening with a fast-paced rap really kicks the song off strongly. The mixture of English and Japanese lyrics is seamless and their efforts to include full English songs since years back are paying off. A last question though… does Sato Shori ever age? He doesn’t seem a year older since their debut in 2011, and one could wonder what the secret is…
While Sexy Zone hasn’t set out to intentionally aim for global success, there’s no doubt that they will be able to catch the hearts of anyone in the world, not just Japan.
After all, it never hurts to “Try This One More Time” when it comes to Sexy Zone and all of their work so far.
