On February 18th, Ae! group (Aぇ! group) commemorated a significant milestone by celebrating their 5th anniversary since their formation in 2019.
To celebrate this occasion, the group arranged a special livestream event, showcasing their 2024 remake of their inaugural stage play, “We are called Ae! group” (僕らAぇ! groupって言いますねん) from 2019. This production, produced again by You Yokoyama of SUPER EIGHT, was a fitting tribute to the group’s journey over the past five years.

Ae! group – pronounced as ‘a group‘ comprises, as of 2024, five members from the Kansai region of Japan: Yoshinori Masakado, Seiya Suezawa, Richard Keita Kusama, Ken Kojima, and Masaya Sano. The group’s formation was officially announced on February 18th, 2019.
The original concept for the group’s name was relatively simple – “A group.” However, there was a suggestion to inject a bit of trendiness into it by adding the little “ぇ” after the “A,” resulting in “Ae! group.” This playful twist creates a pun with the Kansai dialect term “ええ” (ee), which means “good” in English. So, in essence, the name “Ae! group” can be interpreted as “a good group.”
Their power isn’t just in their polished performances but also in their band-style acts, a legacy inherited from their predecessors, SUPER EIGHT. They’re making waves in various areas of the industry with their distinct, unique style, showcasing each member’s individuality while still keeping that unmistakable Kansai STARTO artist flair alive and kicking.
The remake was reminiscent of the original 2019 version, allowing fans to revel in the nostalgia of the group’s journey while witnessing the growth and evolution of their work over the years. The livestream event really pulled fans in, giving them an immersive experience that perfectly captured the group’s essence and the huge impact they’ve had since they first got together.
To many, this livestream was more than just a celebration. It was an assurance. A closure.
On December 30th, 2023, it was announced that Taisei Fukumoto had his contract terminated and, effective immediately, left the group, marking the end of 2023 and the start of 2024 as a bitter moment for fans and others alike. The sudden departure and mystery surrounding it may have left many unsure about the group’s future, feelings, and resolves. With the constant pressure and uncertainty of debut always hanging in the air since long ago, 2024 started out a little extra heavy for both the group and their fans due to the sudden news.
This was why this livestream held much more significance on their day of formation than just being a celebratory event.
In the play, we see Ae! group preparing for their first show after becoming five members. It’s about two hours before the show starts, and in true Ae! group fashion, things don’t quite pass by calmly and poised.
Almost right as the play starts, the group turns up the heat and fuels our flames by performing “Firebird,” one of their original songs. The dance formation has changed from when they were six, and it might be why Seiya’s anticipated line “熱くしてやるよ” (“I’ll turn up the heat“) hits differently. The performance and line burned into the audience as they showed their determination as five.
Aside from their performance at the NHK program New GENE!, “Firebird” is their first public performance as five, and it might be the first time for some people in the audience to see this sight. The group that we have gotten to know as six has transformed into five, and the new formation is proof of the change and future to come.
They’re not only turning up the heat for the moment but for the future as well, reassuring everyone that their flame will continue to burn and reach the universe. Just as the stars in the night sky persistently shine their light across the cosmos, so too do they strive to infuse every moment with the brilliance of their presence.
After the performance wraps up, the guys gather together and reflect on a questionnaire they filled out five years ago. This segment is a touching tribute to everyone who’s been with them since the beginning, evoking a wave of nostalgia as they journey back to where it all started.
At the same time, it’s a testament to the enduring bond and relationship that has developed between them since the group’s formation. The nostalgia is palpable as they recall the moments from 2019 on the same stage and create new ones today as five.
The dedication, passion, and unwavering support that each member has contributed to the group really shines through as they fill the stage with laughter and joy in a way that only Ae! group can do. As they share anecdotes and laughter, there’s a deep sense of gratitude and pride for the enduring friendships and the shared love for the entertainment that brought them together.
Ken shows off his beloved character, Ken-chan, in true Kansai comedy fashion. While the members act like they have had enough of his crazy antics, the adoration and pride in their eyes for their leader does not go undetected.
An endearing moment is when Seiya brings back Seiya-sama, asking each member why people have lips, building anticipation for a great punchline as he gets really close to each of them. However, he never gets to finish the segment on his terms, as Masaya spoils the answer instead. This causes Seiya to throw an adorable tantrum, showcasing how the other members can freely and lovingly tease the oldest.
Without missing a beat, Ken also shamelessly plugs his FILA shoe (yes, shoe, not shoes) to the others, which brings up the topic of the collaboration they’re currently doing with FILA.
To top it off, Richard’s “misheard English” makes a comeback and he takes us through a series of English sentences he misheard as Japanese. Did any of them make any sense? Of course not, and that’s the charm of it! Hopefully, it won’t actually happen on the street, or else we might have a problem…
Yoshinori’s genuine enjoyment of his members’ antics is apparent in the heartfelt way he laughs during this segment, despite the lack of air he seems to intake while laughing. His infectious laughter and scrunched-up face reflect his own joy and amplify the entire group’s enjoyable atmosphere. The natural, unfiltered nature of his laughter not only brings a smile to the faces of his fellow members but also resonates with the viewers, creating a heartwarming connection.
Moments like these truly showcase the friendship and genuine bonds within the group, offering a glimpse into the authentic dynamics that make their interactions so relatable and endearing to fans.
It is also a poignant reminder of how far they have come and the shared history that binds them. Their sense of comedic timing, laughter, and ways of teasing each other show their immense improvement and growth in five years.
One highlight of this part is when Richard leaves for a costume change, Masaya shamelessly eats Richard’s burger that he left on the table, leaving barely a mouthful.
Masaya: "Do you think he'll (Richard) notice if I eat it?"
Yoshinori: "I wonder if he would, maybe, oh well, if it's just that much, it's probably fine."
As Yoshinori keeps talking, Masaya munches on the burger, and there’s something absolutely charming about this whole exchange. When Richard and the others return, Yoshinori and Masaya leave for their costume change. This is when Richard notices his hamburger is no longer as he initially left it. The reason why this whole exchange is so endearing is just the way Masaya simply gets away with this. Either because he’s the youngest and nobody can say anything, or because they’re simply Ae! group.
The BTK and BTC units make a 2024 comeback with a special medley of “Natsu no Kanata” (夏のカナタ) and “Spicy LOVE” (スパイシーLOVE), throwing us back in time once again. As we also get to see some familiar stage personas on stage, we also get to experience the vocal bliss of Ae! group’s polished singing. Each member gets a chance to shine in this section, and their individual skills solidify them as a group – that together, they are stronger.
This section turns into a musical segment, highlighting Masaya’s role as young Simba in a Lion King musical he did before joining the agency. Still, the whole segment truly shines with their crisp vocals in harmony in each song they perform.
Ae! group is more than determined to show us what they got. Even as Miyazaki (You’s character in the play) knocks on the door to the backstage, questioning them as a group. Yoshinori tries to assure him they will be fine, but Miyazaki doesn’t seem quite convinced yet.
Miyazaki: "It all depends on your resolve. Show me that resolve."
With determined eyes and a steady voice, Seiya declares, “Let’s show our resolve then,” and they proceed to pull the covers off their band equipment.
When it comes to Ae! group, their band arrangement is something that many recognize them for, and it’s been weighing on many people’s minds how they will arrange the band arrangement now that Taisei’s bass is gone. They build up the coming song with mixed anticipation, excitement, and a slight sliver of fear, revealing Richard on bass.
Richard, usually in charge of the saxophone, has taken over the bass, which some expected and others didn’t. Allowing him to take center stage and showcase the skills that he learned in a month was an effective way to introduce us to the song. While there may be mixed emotions about Taisei’s departure from the bassist position, it appears that Richard is now seemingly playing the same bass that Taisei once did. Taisei might not be physically with them anymore but his presence lives on. This is another proof of their unyielding dedication to the group and the paths they’ve taken to come this far.
Their resolve is their song, “Kamisama no Bakayaro” (神様のバカヤロー) – written by Ken and composed by Masaya. As they sing, the lyrics resonate with the audience and themselves, and it’s clear that they are baring their hearts and souls. Whether you have heard the song before or not, it digs into your whole being, and it’s something raw and genuine that only they can produce. This is their resolve. Their determination.
This is how they assure everyone that despite the frustration, stumbling, and falls, they are still picking themselves up to go on. To carry on. They embrace their past and nurture it to bring it along toward the future.
This is Ae! group.
Ae! group has left an indelible mark on those who have been with them since the beginning. That influence and presence continue to resonate within the current iteration of Ae! group, reminding everyone that their legacy is neither forgotten nor lost. Rather, it is seamlessly woven into the fabric of who they are and will always be. This lasting legacy acts as both an inspiration and a compass, influencing the present and future path of Ae! group.
The song marks the end of the play, but before the curtain falls, Miyazaki has a few words to say to each group member, and each speech references the one he gave them back in 2019.

Sano Masaya.
I keep being amazed by your recent achievements. Your quick thinking, tough mentality, strong competitive spirit… I have said before that I look forward to see what the future holds for you. I have said that you are an extremely talented person.
You have far exceeded my expectations. I cannot even imagine how you will become from now on. I am really looking forward to your future.
Masaya: “The 5 of us will become big stars and do our best to be able to return the favor to you with our achievements. ”
Kusama Richard Keita.
First of all, the bass. I could feel your determination. I am sure that you will play the bass while carrying many feelings from now on. It will definitely be okay if it’s you. I know that you are a shy person. Despite that, it seems like you have been doing your best and are communicating with the staff recently. It reached my ears. I am truly proud of you. I have said before that it’s a matter of time before people start paying attention to you. These days, you are attracting attention from the public. But I know that there is still so much more you can do.
Richard: “Of course. I got more in me. I will get even more attention from now on and become the number one in the world. Please continue watching me. Thank you so much.”

Suezawa Seiya.
You are the oldest member of Ae! group. I believe that you providing an atmosphere that it is okay to tease you is what creates a very good atmosphere between the members. There is something I think of every time I watch Ae! group’s stage performance. That you really have an aura that makes you stand out. That aura is starting to shine even brighter now. It makes me think that this is what people call charisma. Please continue to captivate the fans with your performance from now on as well.
Seiya: “Yes. I’ll continue doing my best with all my heart and soul as always from now on as well. Thank you very much.”
Masakado Yoshinori.
You should share more funny stories like the washlet incident when you’re on TV! I remember saying that you take a step back to support the other members. Now it is different. The way you are now, your intention to maintain everyone’s balance while also pulling and taking the lead gets across. It is amazing that you are able to bring such unique members together. It is not something just anyone can do. With you around, I am sure that it will be okay.
Masakado: “Thank you very much. I want to keep exploring the Ae! group that only I can bring out. We will run forward with all of us as the main characters and be active at the forefront. Thank you so much.”

Kojima Ken.
Five years have passed, and there is one thing I think of the most. That I am really glad that you are the leader. People around you naturally start smiling. This is a natural-born gift. You are soft-heartened and so easily moved to tears, and I love those very human qualities about you. Lately, you have been producing the younger juniors, and your talent is blooming. You have a power to attract people to you. As long as you believe in yourself and continue moving forward, I am sure that the path will open to you.
Kojima: “Thank you very much. Thanks to you I love myself being on stage. Please continue taking care of us from now on.”
And last, Fukumoto Taisei, who was supposed to be here. I am truly frustrated and sad that you aren’t here with us. These are everyone’s honest feelings. What you should do now, your way to pay back, is to become such a big person that it will make the other five frustrated. This is not an easy task. But you will be okay. Because you are someone who has been fighting in the entertainment industry and as a member of Ae! group. You definitely should be able to shine wherever you go. I, no, everyone believes so.
As Miyazaki spoke about Taisei, the raw and vulnerable side of Ae! group, which hasn’t been seen since December 30th, slowly cracked through the hardened exterior. Word by word, they tore the walls down, and as the last spotlight died out where Taisei would have stood, it was evident on the member’s faces that the current situation was not what they had initially wished for. Their showcase of emotions and the breaking voice of You’s as Miyazaki hit hard, and no eyes were left dry.
They have put up a strong front for everyone to assure them that they are okay and will do everything in their power to ensure everyone feels safe with them. That, despite the turbulence, the Ae! group is safe because they are still here, and they are still fighting.
Seeing the members vulnerable and exposed only makes you want to assure them, “Yes, we are still here.”
“We’re rooting for you.”
“It’s our time to assure you that we, your fans, are with you all the way.”
Ae! group.
Miyazaki (You Yokoyama)
You are really a good group. Ah, I said it wrong on purpose just now. You are Ae! group. You are a truly good (Ae!) group that consists of unique members. Please continue doing your best from now on with determination. I have prepared the best stage for you. It is Kyocera Dome. Please produce great results there.
Seiya: “We will definitely produce good results in Kyocera Dome. But we can’t do it only by ourselves.”
Richard: “We want to build a deeper relationship with everyone. Yes, like white rice and salted kelp1.”
Masaya: “You paid off the foreshadowing of the salted kelp from earlier!”
Ken: “I am sure that we will continue facing many walls and obstacles on our way. But please follow us.”
Masakado: “Please”
All: “Give us your support!”
At the end of their ending speeches, amid the emotional storm, a last tribute to Taisei from the members was made, signaling the end of this road as they venture onto another.
“Neither defeated by rain
nor defeated by wind,
no matter what obstacles may come our way,
we'll show you that we can wash them away completely,
(like a) WIPER~!”
One last time, Taisei‘s most popular gag, “Wiper~!” was performed as they embarked on the next chapter in their never-ending story.
It doesn’t mean that the road they walked on is abandoned; it will always remain, and if they suddenly look back, they can still see the footsteps they left behind. The road ahead is simply a fork in the road. The view they will see in the future will surely be fantastic as they spread their colors across the universe.
To many, this marked a closure; to some, it still left the wound open. However, no matter the feelings regarding the final tribute to the precious and treasured member, it’s not the end.

The faint heat, reverberations, and afterimages of them – past, present, and future, will linger on the empty stage as they leave for the next project. The days will continue to pass, and the clock won’t stop, but Ae! group will keep on being Ae! group – in any form, and spin an endless tale for us all to enjoy.
Ae! group’s story is never-ending, and their and our dreams will never end, so let the adventure go on, with PRIDE.
