Kota Yabu (Hey! Say! JUMP) and Richard Keita Kusama (Ae! group) will star in the Japanese edition of Jonathan Larson’s musical “tick, tick…BOOM!”

The musical “RENT” is immensely popular in Japan. This work, which changed the history of Broadway, was created by the legendary musical writer Jonathan Larson, who passed away suddenly just before its opening night. “tick, tick…BOOM!” is based on Jonathan’s experiences during his struggling years, depicting his conflicts and growth through numerous songs.
Jonathan (played by Kota) dreams of becoming a successful musical writer while working at a diner. Despite his passionate dedication to his craft, he faces difficulties and sustains himself with part-time jobs. With famous musical writers achieving success before turning 30, Jonathan feels increasingly anxious as he counts down to his 30th birthday.
Susan (played by Ayaka Umeda), his girlfriend who aspired to be a dancer, considers taking another job and suggests that Jonathan leave New York with her. His best friend Michael (played by Richard), who once aimed to be an actor, has already given up on his dream and become a businessman. Now successful, he advises Jonathan to find a stable job. With just one week left until his 30th birthday, the ticking sound in his head grows louder like a time bomb.
Should he give up on his dreams? Despite his internal struggle, Jonathan continues working on his musical, hoping for a breakthrough at a showcase attended by industry professionals.
“tick, tick…BOOM!” will be performed at Tokyo’s Theatre Creation starting October 6, following shows at the Tokai City Arts Theater in Aichi on November 3 and 4, and at the COOL JAPAN PARK OSAKA WW Hall in Osaka from November 7 to 11.
