Naniwa Danshi‘s Shunsuke Michieda will star in the original work “M.I.S.S.I.O.N.: Kageki na Sennyu Sosa-kan” (M.I.S.S.I.O.N 歌劇な潜入捜査官), which is produced by Storm Labels and will premiere exclusively on Prime Video this September.
The project is described as an unprecedented genre mix of “detective” × “female college student” × “musical” — an undercover suspenseful comedy about reliving youth. Along with the announcement, a teaser visual was released showing the protagonist Kanata Matsumi in his “two different personas,” both played by Shunsuke.
Shunsuke has gained enormous popularity both in Japan and overseas as a member of Naniwa Danshi, while also building a successful acting career. He made his drama debut in “Haha ni Naru” (2017) and had his first starring film role in “Even If This Love Disappears from the World Tonight” (2022). In recent years, he has appeared in high-profile works such as the dramas “My Second Aoharu” (2023), “Mars” (2024) and “Caster” (2025), as well as the films “461 Days of Bento: A Promise Between Father and Son” (2020) and “99.9 Criminal Lawyer: The Movie” (2021). This March also saw the release of the second film in which he plays the lead, “The Last Song You Left Behind,” with the latest, “In The Clear Moonlit Dusk,” releasing later this fall, making him one of the hottest young stars in the industry today.
In this new project, Shunsuke takes on the role of Kanata Matsumi, an elite detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Third Investigative Division. Brilliant and highly athletic but socially awkward, Matsumi is a lone-wolf young detective who one day receives a top-secret assignment from the Public Security Bureau. His mission is to infiltrate the Tsubakino University of the Arts, where the suspect behind a series of drone bombing incidents is believed to be hiding. To blend into the arts university, where most of the students are women, without revealing his identity as a detective, Kanata goes undercover as a female.
As the investigation progresses, Kanata somehow ends up being cast in a musical production as well. While participating in rehearsals, he becomes inspired by his fellow performers who are working hard toward the show, and gradually becomes more passionate about rehearsing than the investigation itself. Together with companions who transcend differences in gender and social standing, Kanata experiences the youthful days he was never able to enjoy before. However, on the day of the performance, the situation suddenly takes a dramatic turn. Will Kanata be able to uncover the identity of the bomber? And what will happen to the musical?
The newly revealed teaser visual contrasts Kanata‘s face as a detective with his appearance disguised as a female college student for the undercover mission. His sharp gaze as an elite investigator and his natural presence blending in among the students at an arts university are shown side by side in the same frame, highlighting the drama’s unique premise.

Comments from Shunsuke Michieda
Q: How did you feel when you received the offer for the role?
A: “One of my dreams was to play a detective, so I was really happy. On top of that, I’d never played a role where I go undercover as a female college student, so I thought it sounded really interesting. I also really love comedy as a genre, so I was excited to appear in a work with strong comedic elements.
It’s also a coming-of-age story, and the cast is full of really distinctive characters, so I feel like it’ll be a very impactful production.”
Q: What was it like playing a character infiltrating a group made up almost entirely of women?
A: “I tried researching what female students at an arts university might be like. Sometimes I would discover things after trying them out, like, ‘Maybe this would feel more natural,’ so I really valued the ideas that came up on set.
But dressing as a woman was definitely tough. I wore a wig from the first day of filming until the very end, so the feeling of relief when I finally took it off was incredible.
Most of the cast members were women too, so there were a lot of moments where I was like, ‘Where exactly am I supposed to be?’ (laughs). There was also a lot of improvised conversation, but everyone else’s cheerful energy really carried me along, and I had a lot of fun acting.”
Q: How do you think you’d feel if you personally had to infiltrate a place full of women by yourself?
A: “It might honestly be kind of exhausting (laughs). I think I’d be extremely conscious of trying not to make anyone uncomfortable.”
Q: Please leave a message for everyone looking forward to the series.
A: “This is a project where you’ll get to see many different sides of Shunsuke Michieda — as a detective, as a woman, and in musical scenes. There are also a lot of moments that will make you chuckle, so I hope people can watch it casually and enjoy it. And if this work inspires someone to work hard toward their own dreams, that would make me really happy.”
