Naniwa Danshi will provide the official theme for “M.I.S.S.I.O.N.: Kagekina Sennyu Sosa-kan” (M.I.S.S.I.O.N. 歌劇な潜入捜査官) an original STORM Film production starring member Shunsuke Michieda premiering September 14. Written specifically for this work, “BLACK OUT MISSION” echoes the title of the series, creating an overlap between the unprecedented undercover mission undertaken by Shunsuke‘s character and the world of the song. The track also overturns preconceived notions of Naniwa Danshi‘s established public image, revealing a new side of their musical expression.

Taking on the unprecedented combination of “detective × female university student” × musical,” Shunsuke—who continues to demonstrate remarkable versatility and charisma as a leading actor—throws himself fully into the role of an elite detective who is bewildered by a kind of ‘youth’ he has never experienced before.
The production also boasts an impressive, multi-generational cast, including Shiori Kubo, Nagisa Shibuya, Anna Ishii, Ayana Shiramoto, and Kyoka as students from the Tsubakino University of the Arts, where Kanata goes undercover as part of his investigation. The ensemble also features Rie Minemura as Kinue Onikibo, the strict dormitory supervisor, Masahiro Takashima as Ichiro Doigaki, the head of the Public Security Department, Hirona Yamazaki as Nodoka Umino, Ichiro‘s right-hand woman, and Ryusei Fukada of the Junior group ACEes as Mizuki Noshiro, a second undercover detective.
Story Overview
The story follows Kanata Matsumi (Shunsuke Michieda), a detective in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department’s Third Investigative Division. He is exceptionally intelligent and athletically gifted, but struggles with interpersonal relationships and is a lone wolf.
One day, Kanata is given a top-secret assignment by the Public Security Department: He must go undercover at the Tsubakino University of the Arts, where the perpetrators behind a series of drone bombing incidents are believed to be hiding.
The building was a women’s college until three years ago and remains a campus made up almost entirely of female students. In order to infiltrate it without revealing that he is a detective, Kanata decides to disguise himself as a woman.
There, he encounters Haruna Kirihara (Shiori Kubo), the star of the musical and the ace student in the vocal music department; Riko Oguma (Nagisa Shibuya), who realizes Kanata‘s true identity but becomes his ally in the investigation; and Misuzu Tomoda (Anna Ishii), who harbors hostility toward Kanata after he takes a role away from her.
As Kanata spends time with the colorful students, he gradually becomes so absorbed in rehearsing for the musical that he loses sight of his investigation. But on the day of the performance, everything suddenly takes a turn.
Will Kanata be able to uncover the identity of the bomber? And what will become of the musical?

“It’s been a while since I’ve had the opportunity to have [Naniwa Danshi perform] a theme song for a drama in which I’m starring in, so I’m really happy about it! It has a darker atmosphere than isn’t something we usually do as Naniwa Danshi, and I think you can also feel the traditions of our agency in it, so I’d be really happy if everyone enjoys it together with the series.”
