Could you imagine combining the charm and sparkle of a top-tier idol with the explosive energy and hilarious reactions of one of Japan’s most beloved comedians? Well, you don’t have to, because Japanese television has just made it a reality. Kaito Takahashi, a member of King & Prince, and Atsuhiro Tsuda, one half of the comedy duo Diane, have formed a completely unexpected partnership to co-host a brand-new variety special titled “Somosomo Mystery” (The Mystery from the Very Beginning). Set to air on TV Tokyo on June 11th at 6:25 PM (JST), this fresh program promises to become a major television hit by blending fascinating world secrets, accessible history, and plenty of laughs.

The concept behind this new format stems from a very relatable observation about modern media: occult and mystery programs have recently become a bit too complex and overly academic, often overwhelming viewers who are simply looking to relax and enjoy their evening. Noticing this trend, the show’s producer decided to steer in a different direction. The ultimate goal for this project was to return to the core of family entertainment, creating a mystery show that is straightforward yet substantial, offering solid information in an easy-to-digest manner. To bring this vision to life, the production team chose two deeply curious hosts whose dynamic was pure magic in the studio.
The core theme of “Somosomo Mystery” revolves around tackling those basic, lingering questions that we have all thought about at least once but can rarely explain to someone else. For instance, the show addresses queries like, “Who exactly was King Tutankhamun in his everyday life?” or “What solid, undeniable evidence do we actually have regarding UFOs today?”. The program is designed so that the audience can learn alongside the hosts, with no prior knowledge of history or astrophysics required. Instead of a dry lecture, it focuses on sparking curiosity through fun studio debates, trivia that you will immediately want to share with your friends, and high-stakes exclusive footage. In fact, the special is making a grand entrance by showcasing world-first television footage of an ancient Egyptian royal tomb that has remained untouched for over a century since the discovery of Tutankhamun.
During the filming period, the atmosphere was incredibly energetic and warm. Kaito displayed natural charm and warm empathy, particularly when interacting with the “child investigators” present on set, earning high praise from the staff for shaping the show’s welcoming tone. On the other hand, Atsuhiro brought a wonderful sense of nostalgia and comedy that perfectly mirrored traditional Japanese variety shows. In his post-shooting comments, he jokingly admitted that although he was supposed to figure out how to guide the show to ensure its long-term success, he got so genuinely captivated by the footage that he forgot to act like a host and just enjoyed it as a regular viewer. He also remarked that the broadcast captures the classic vibe of the mystery programs he grew up watching, filled with mind-boggling footage and a mix of historical facts and absurdly entertaining theories.

The on-screen chemistry between the two artists was so undeniable that the executive producer has already expressed a strong desire to transition this one-time special into a regular weekly series. The production team is highly optimistic about the audience’s reaction, actively encouraging fans and families alike to tune in during the live broadcast and support the show through local streaming platforms like TVer. Combining compelling topics like Ancient Egyptian curses and modern UFO sightings explained without the complicated jargon, “Somosomo Mystery” is shaping up to be the perfect program to gather the whole family around the screen for an evening of learning and laughter.

■ Comments from Kaito Takahashi
“I used to just read online about mysterious things like the pyramids, things far removed from our daily lives, and think, ‘I see,’ but when I delved deeper, I realized there were all sorts of facts about history, human relationships, and so on, and that’s all part of the mystery. It felt like they finally scratched the surface of something I’d always wondered about. What I really liked about this program is that you can watch it without thinking too deeply. There’s so much mysterious information that I’m sure you’ll find at least one thing that catches your eye and makes you think, ‘That’s interesting!’ It’s a program full of little bits of information that you’ll want to share with your friends at school or work. I think you can watch it while you’re eating and think, ‘Ah, that’s interesting!'”
■ Comments from Atsuhiro Tsuda
“While thinking about what we should do to make it a long-running show… we couldn’t do anything (laughs). I just enjoyed watching it. It was fun because it had a slightly nostalgic feel, like the shows we used to watch when we were kids.
There is some truly world-first footage, some information that you really don’t need, and information that makes you wonder, ‘Is this real or fake?,’ and I think it’s a show that will stir everyone’s emotions!”
