For a few seconds, nobody seemed to understand what was happening.
A video had suddenly started playing at Zojoji Temple, looking back at the years Taisho Iwasaki, Mizuki Inoue, Reia Nakamura, Soya Igari, and Taiko Sasaki had spent in the agency. Even the five members themselves looked confused about why they were watching it.
Then came the announcement: KEY TO LIT will make their CD debut.
The reaction was immediate. The members cried, the fans cried, and what had been a fun summer evening at Zojoji suddenly became one of the biggest moments in KEY TO LITโs history. On 17 August, KEY TO LIT held a special fan event at the historic temple in Tokyo. With Tokyo Tower nearby, the location was already unusual enough to have the members excited. What they did not know was that this would also be the place where they learned, together with their fans, that their long-awaited debut was finally happening.
Before the Tears, There Was Chaos
Earlier that evening, there was very little indication of just how emotional things were about to become.
Before the members appeared, the host asked us to practise the chants we would be doing during the event. KEY TO LIT then emerged from inside the temple wearing costumes with elements inspired by traditional Japanese clothing, holding gold folding fans as they performed their opening song, “KITERETSU FIRE,” which introduced each of the five members.
Afterwards, they removed their outer robes and introduced themselves individually. They were clearly impressed by their surroundings, excitedly talking about how amazing it was to be holding an event at Zojoji with Tokyo Tower nearby.
And then, naturally, things became chaotic.
While they were talking, a flying insect suddenly appeared around Taishoโs head and completely distracted everyone. Later, Taiko was responsible for teaching us a chant. It was supposed to be simple: โOne, two, three, four, five, six, seven, YAY!โ
Soya apparently decided it needed a little more production and started adding his own beatboxing.
It was silly, relaxed and very entertaining. At the same time, though, the five seemed genuinely nervous about the video shoot they had been told was coming next.
Except there was no normal video shoot waiting for them.
โWeโre Really Debuting?โ
Instead, the screen began showing the membersโ histories, going all the way back to when they joined the agency as children.
Their confusion was obvious.
They watched the footage seemingly trying to understand what it had to do with the event. Then, suddenly, it all made sense.
They were debuting.
Watching their reactions in real time was what made the announcement so memorable. This was not a situation where the members walked onstage already knowing the news and then revealed it to us. We were watching the exact moment they discovered it themselves.
Almost immediately, all five were in tears.
Mizuki was especially emotional. Even when Reia was speaking, Mizuki seemed to start crying even harder. When it was finally his turn to talk, he reflected on the promise he had made to himself that this would be the year he debuted.
And now it actually was.
Soya could not stop crying either. Through his tears, he expressed how happy he was while also seeming almost unable to believe that he really got to debut.
When the conversation eventually turned towards what kind of future KEY TO LIT wanted to build, Soya mentioned ARASHI and SMAP as examples of the kind of group he hoped they could become.
Reia described everything happening around him as feeling like a dream. He had not expected the announcement at all, but reminded himself that this was, in fact, reality. From this point onwards, he said, KEY TO LIT would move forward not only through their own strength, but also thanks to the support of everyone around them.
Taisho, meanwhile, initially seemed capable of describing the situation with only one very appropriate phrase:
โYabai desu!โ
He admitted that he was almost afraid to open his eyes because he worried the whole thing might disappear and turn out to have been a dream. More than anything, he was happy that the five of them could experience such an important moment together with their fans.
Still not entirely convinced it was real, he eventually asked to be pinched.
Then Taisho was already thinking several years ahead. He announced that KEY TO LIT wanted to perform at a dome within three years.
A few moments later, perhaps realising exactly what he had just committed them to, he revised the plan.
Maybe five years.
Somehow, even in the middle of all that crying, they were still making everyone laugh.
Zojoji Was Already a Big Deal
Taikoโs reaction put the surprise into perspective in a different way.
Before they even entered the event, the five members had apparently been excited among themselves about the venue, saying how incredible it was that they were at Zojoji.
That alone had felt like something worth celebrating.
They had no idea what was waiting for them inside.
The members were so shaken after the announcement that the MC eventually joked about whether they had forgotten their choreography. Somehow, after all the tears, they still had a performance to finish.
The debut announcement carries even more weight when remembering that KEY TO LIT itself was only formed in February 2025. The group may be relatively new, but its five members are not. Each had already spent years working as a Junior before KEY TO LIT existed.
That was why the video preceding the announcement felt particularly meaningful. We were not simply being shown the history of a group formed last year. We were watching years of individual journeys suddenly converge into the same destination.
And for once, the fans did not hear about that destination afterwards.
We were there when the members found out.
A New Chapter for KEY TO LIT
KEY TO LIT will make their CD debut through Universal Music this winter, with their debut single also scheduled for release this winter. Its title, exact release date, and further details will be announced later.
There will be plenty more announcements to come. There will be a debut single to buy, performances to watch and, if Taisho gets his way, perhaps a dome concert somewhere in their not-too-distant future.
But my strongest memory from Zojoji will probably remain those first few seconds after the announcement.
Five people who had spent years trying to reach debut were suddenly being told they had made it.
And judging by all the tears, it took them a while to believe it.
