pappa peppe
Pushing up the average age of the authors a bit, that’s me… Pappa Peppe is a nickname I received from some Real Japanese Idols, and it explains a lot. I basically got into Japanese music thanks to my daughter’s interest in Japanese culture. Although I do have a blue belt in judo from way back.
I’m initially an indie and hard rock guy, but back in 2016, I got sucked into the rabbit hole of Japanese music after a random YouTube search and some clever sidebar suggestions. I really had to get used to the entire idol thing, but I think I got it by now. My main interest is idols that are a bit off-centre. Some call them alt-idols, dark idols, or chika idols, but by now I understand that an idol is an idol. That’s what I would like to put in the Dumpling Box.
I hope I will be able to show some of the variety in the Japanese idol culture here, as well as rock bands, without becoming too random or niched. But it will absolutely happen that I will be talking about some artist with 300 followers on Twitter or a video on YouTube not even coming close to 10,000 views.
Trivia about me: my knowledge of the Japanese language is a vocabulary of about 20 words, I have never been to Japan, I play bass in a J-rock band, and I’m originally from The Netherlands. Nice to meet you.
