Juniors Koki Kawasaki, Kohei Aoki and Kairu Tamura star in musical play “2FATE: Two Hearts And One Dream”

Koki Kawasaki, who was a member of and leader of the group Shonen Ninja, leads his very first musical, “2FATE: Two Hearts, One Dream” (“2FATE ~二つの心と一つの夢~”), which will be staged at Theater H in February from the 21st to the 28th. Fellow Juniors Kohei Aoki and Kairu Tamura are also part of the cast in key roles.

This play is based on the short film “2FATE,” which was written, directed, edited, and scored by Jun Yoriko in 2022, a creator known for numerous stage works including the stage adaptations of the bestselling SF novel “Legend of the Galactic Heroes” and “HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH SPECIAL SHOW” starring John Cameron Mitchell. The film won the Best Drama Award at the Paris Film Awards in France that same year. For this production, Yoriko has extensively remade the original setting to suit the stage performers, transforming it into a musical drama.

While retaining the core storyline of two lives brought together through a tragic twist of fate and striving toward the same goal, this stage version changes the main characters to male roles and places greater emphasis on the friendship between them, portraying their growth along the way.

Story Overview

Kenichi Sato (Koki Kawasaki), a young designer working at an advertising agency, undergoes a heart transplant due to a severe heart disease. After the operation, while drifting in and out of consciousness, he hears the voice of a young man, Makoto Yamada (Kohei Aoki), saying, “My heart is inside you now.” After awakening, Kenichi begins to dream of Makoto singing on stage. Eventually, Makoto‘s ghost appears before him, demanding, “If you won’t fulfill my dream, give me my heart back.” As Kenichi senses changes within himself, he decides to carry on Makoto‘s wish. He then takes lessons at the music school run by Makoto‘s father, Tsuyoshi Yamada (Koichi Fujiura), and, with support from Makoto‘s younger brother Kaito (Kairu Tamura), he performs Makoto‘s songs at a hospital. With the help of many supporters, he is eventually selected to perform at a large-scale live event.

A key visual has recently been unveiled, centering on Kawasaki‘s character and evoking a story told through music, in line with the production’s core concept: “Who decides the meaning of life?”

Comments

Koki Kawasaki

“I’m Koki Kawasaki, and I will be playing Kenichi Sato. This is my first time appearing in a musical, so I’ve been very excited ever since I heard about the project. I will do my utmost to portray Kenichi’s feelings as he overcomes a heart transplant and pursues his dream of becoming an artist together with Makoto’s heart inside him, interpreting the role in my own way. I hope you’ll look forward to it.”

Kohei Aoki

“I’m Kohei Aoki, and I will be playing Makoto Yamada. I’m truly excited to be involved in the stage adaptation of 2FATE, a work that has received awards at many film festivals. Through the story of Makoto entrusting his heart and dreams to Kenichi, played by Koki, and the two moving forward together to make those dreams come true, I will do my best to deliver courage, love, and emotion to the audience. I believe you’ll also get to see a new side of me, so please look forward to it.”

Kairu Tamura

“I’m Kairu Tamura, and I will be playing Kaito Yamada. I’ve already been nervous since hearing about the project, but I’m also very excited about what kind of stage this will become! More than anything, I’m filled with joy and gratitude to be involved in this production. I’ll work hard to blend into the world of 2FATE in my own way. Your support means everything to me—please come see us at the theater!”

Jun Yoriko

“I am deeply grateful to be in charge of the script, direction, and visuals for the musical 2FATE. The original film 2FATE was a short film created for submission to international film festivals. I wanted to explore the idea of how, after a heart transplant, the recipient might feel memories of the original owner or develop the same habits—experiences that push them forward into a “second life.” I was truly happy to receive the offer to adapt it for the stage. While the content has been significantly changed for this theatrical version, the core idea I want to express—and the concept of “Who decides the meaning of life?”—remains the same. Together with Koki Kawasaki and this wonderful cast, we will create a production that audiences can truly enjoy. I hope you will come and see it at the theater.”
