Japanese television is gearing up for one of the most emotional and powerful premieres of the year. On April 18th at 9:00 PM, TV Asahi will air the drama “Innocent Witness” (Muku naru Shounin), a production that stands out not only for its stellar cast but for the depth of the themes it tackles: human connection through justice and neurodiversity.
This work is the first Japanese adaptation of the hit 2019 Korean film of the same name, written by Moon Ji-won (who later achieved global fame with Extraordinary Attorney Woo) and directed by Lee Han. With over 2.3 million viewers in South Korea, the story now arrives in Japan with a refreshed narrative that promises to move the Japanese audience.

A Lead Duo with Real Chemistry
The central axis of the plot rests on Toshiaki Karasawa, who plays Kyosuke Hasebe, a public defender tasked with representing a housekeeper accused of murdering a wealthy businessman. Facing him, in an acting duel that has generated great expectation, is Takahisa Masuda, a member of the group NEWS, making his debut in a TV Asahi drama.
Massu brings to life Seiichi Mizogawa, a young and passionate prosecutor determined to reveal the truth behind the crime. What makes this character special is his personal connection to the case: his own brother has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), allowing him to quickly bond with the sole witness of the murder, Nozomi Koike, a young girl with the same condition. The relationship between Toshiaki and Massu transcends the screen. According to interviews Toshiaki sent a personal message to Massu before filming began, saying: “This role is perfect for you, Massu!”. This mutual trust is reflected in courtroom scenes charged with tension, yet grounded in palpable humanity.
One of the production’s greatest challenges was finding an actress capable of playing Nozomi Koike, the young girl with ASD who holds the key to the mystery. The role went to Ami Toma, whose career is on a meteoric rise. Her performance seeks to move away from stereotypes, focusing on the purity and communication difficulties of a young woman who sees the world differently but with disarming honesty.
A Cast of Veterans and Rising Stars
The drama does not skimp on talent for its supporting characters. Atsuko Sendo plays the accused, Eiko Nakano, who pleads her innocence in a role she described as “extremely demanding and full of tension.” Meanwhile, Naomi Nishida portrays Kumiko Matsushima, a human rights lawyer and the protagonist’s former partner, marking her fourth collaboration with Toshiaki. The emotional depth is rounded out by Tamae Ando as Nozomi’s mother, who struggles to integrate her daughter into a society that often fails to understand her, and the legendary Isao Hashizume and Akira Emoto, who bring the weight of experience to key roles related to Hasebe’s past and the dark dynamics of major law firms.
“Innocent Witness” is not just a legal drama about who committed a murder. It is, at its heart, a story about respect and empathy. As Massu mentioned in his statements: “It is a gentle work that makes you feel the desire to value others naturally.” The drama explores how two men on opposite sides of the law (prosecutor and lawyer) must learn to listen to someone society often ignores to reach true justice. With meticulous cinematography and a script that inherits Moon Ji-won’s sensitivity, TV Asahi is betting on content that invites reflection on truth, purity, and the invisible barriers we build between one another.
