7 MEN Samurai’s “Ashiato”—Tomorrow’s Footsteps

Few songs have the power to pause time, enveloping listeners in a moment so intimate it feels as though it exists outside the boundaries of the concert hall. “Ashiato” (足跡; Footsteps) by 7 MEN Samurai is one such song—a tender ballad that not only marks a shift in their typically high-energy setlist but also reveals a deeper, more vulnerable side of the group.

In the intimate setting of TOKYO DOME CITY HALL, it’s hard not to get emotional when a talented group of individuals like 7 MEN SamuraiReia Nakamura, Katsuki Motodaka, Rinne Sugeta, Taiko Sasaki, Taiki Konno, and Rei Yabana— stand before you, baring their souls through their performance.

Live, the impact of “Ashiato” is amplified. The atmosphere shifts palpably as the first chords resonate through the venue. The vibrant energy of the earlier setlist fades into hushed anticipation as if the entire audience is holding its breath. By the time the final note fades, the room is awash in quiet reverence, broken only by the sound of applause that feels as cathartic as it is celebratory.

7 MEN Samurai has been impressing their fans and audiences all over the world with their borderless and unapologetic style, much different from the usual sparkling idol image fellow groups in their generations have.

Over the years, the group is known for being equally chaotic and ridiculous as they are talented on screen and stage. Their vibrant personalities often shine through in their various escapades, from going viral due to walking into a glass door to doing stupid challenges on YouTube (thank you very much Taiko), showcasing their playful friendship and willingness to entertain their fans in unexpected ways.

They have also hosted a series of exciting events, including a spectacular live band battle that drew crowds and showcased emerging talents, as well as a thrilling nationwide hall tour that took them to various cities, allowing fans to experience their charm, chaos and humor in person. All of it also culminated in their very first all-group stage play, a significant milestone that highlighted not only their artistic abilities but also their dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring new creative avenues. The members of the group are an eclectic mix of talents and personalities, each contributing uniquely to their collective identity and success.

Knowing that opportunities like a nationwide hall tour, or touring at all, do not come handed to you on a silver plate, watching 7 MEN Samurai up close made you feel immensely grateful and moved. The energy radiating from the stage, coupled with the passion of each member, was a vivid reminder of the countless hours of hard work and dedication that go into such events.

After a show filled with songs that perfectly encapsulated who they are as a group, it was clear that moments like these are rare gems in the entertainment world—fleeting but unforgettable. The experience not only ignited your admiration for their craft but also reinforced the idea that perseverance and resilience truly pave the way for success in such a competitive industry.

Before the song begins, member Reia steps forward to address the audience. His words, warm and sincere, set the tone for what is to come.

Because you’re here, we get to stand on the stage we love. Your voices, your smiles, your unwavering support—even from afar—let us give 120% and create the best possible live show together. Let’s continue making memories hand in hand and leave important footsteps behind, together.

This moment feels less like a scripted introduction and more like a confession of gratitude. It is this sincerity that gives “Ashiato” its power. The song becomes more than just a performance; it transforms into a bridge between the members and their audience, a space where memories intertwine and footsteps align.

In interviews, Taiko shared that “Ashiato” captures the members’ personal feelings and daily experiences, symbolizing both the memories they have built with their fans and the footsteps they continue to take on their journey together. This connection was palpable during its live performance at TOKYO DOME CITY HALL. As the heartfelt melody filled the venue, it felt as if the group was reaching out, inviting every fan to walk beside them on this shared path.

From the very first note, “Ashiato” feels like a quiet embrace, each chord a step forward on a path that stretches both behind and ahead. The instrumentation is delicate yet rich, building gradually from soft piano and strings into an expansive, soaring arrangement that mirrors the emotional weight of the song.

Each member gets their chance to shine, letting their vocals take the spotlight as they stand in front of the audience, rooted on the spot, compared to the usual vibrant choreographies their songs have. It’s a reminder to focus on the present; to focus on the members before you, as if time stood still.

The emotions on their faces are evident as they sing, and the vocals of the members intertwine with precision; as if the voices of the members are footsteps falling in sync, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose.

Rinne’s soft, delicate vocals tug at your heartstrings, making you want to embrace him just as softly as he sings. Each note flows effortlessly, wrapping around you like a warm blanket on a chilly evening, evoking emotions that resonate deep within your soul.

His voice carries an ethereal quality, drawing you into a world where worries fade away, and all that remains is the enchanting beauty of his sound. As he sings, you can almost feel the gentle caress of each lyric, inviting you to experience a sense of tenderness and connection.

What stands out is also Reia’s vocal improvement, which has become increasingly evident over recent performances; his range has expanded, allowing him to effortlessly hit the higher notes he previously struggled with while maintaining clarity and emotion. His ability to convey feelings through their music has captivated many in the audience, showcasing not only his technical prowess but also his growing artistry and confidence on stage.

Reia’s vocals, which previously leaned towards sharp and piercing upper registers that occasionally clashed with the instrumental balance, have now matured to seamlessly align with the tonal quality and emotional nuances of the music.

The metaphor of “footsteps” permeates every facet of the song. Each line acknowledges the winding, uneven paths that shape our lives, celebrating not the ease of the journey but the resilience it takes to continue walking. There is beauty in the imperfection of these paths—the shoelaces that come undone, the steep hills, the occasional misstep. “Ashiato” doesn’t shy away from these realities; instead, it finds meaning in them.

The ballad carries a dual perspective—one that reflects the group’s journey while simultaneously inviting fans to reflect on their own. The message feels deeply personal yet universally relatable. As the melody swells, it becomes clear that “Ashiato” is not just about the past; it is a promise for the future. The footsteps they sing about are not solitary but collective, a reminder that even when the road feels lonely, we walk it together.

This performance of “Ashiato” stands as a testament to 7 MEN Samurai‘s growth, not only as musicians but as storytellers. They remind us that while perfection may be unattainable, there is immense beauty in the act of continuing forward, step by step.

In a world that often feels like it moves too quickly, “Ashiato” offers a rare pause—an invitation to look back at the footsteps that brought us to where we are today and to cherish the ones we will take tomorrow. It is a song that lingers long after it ends, leaving its mark in the hearts of all who hear it, much like footprints etched into soft earth, destined to remain even as the seasons change.

As a fan of Rinne, seeing him on stage before me was magical on its own but also felt like witnessing a dream come to life. After seeing him in his stage play “Manzai Gang – Reloaded –,” I made it a personal goal to see him live, as 7 MEN Samurai’s Rinne Sugeta. A simple, selfish wish of mine, as I live about 8335 km apart from him. One that came true, about 435 days after I last saw Rinne.

His presence alone carried a weight that was hard to put into words—a reminder of the distance between us, yet how that distance somehow disappears through the power of music.

Hearing him and the rest of 7 MEN Samurai perform Ashiato was nothing short of magical, as if each note stitched together fragments of memories and experiences. It felt like an affirmation that every choice, every moment of hardship, and every step taken up until now had not been in vain. Along the tears on my cheeks, there was a quiet reassurance in that performance, as if the song itself whispered, “Your journey matters, thank you for being here.”

As uncertain as the future is for everyone, at some points, it feels even worse when you’re miles apart and there’s no promise that you’ll ever see each other again.

However, Ashiato makes you hopeful that it doesn’t matter when, or where you are because even if the night is empty of stars, you’ll always have someone who has walked beside you, adding their footsteps alongside yours. It’s a reminder that tomorrow is as bright as you make it, not as others decide for you.

To me, that someone is Rinne.

So, here’s to another selfish wish, as I look at the same sky we’re under, that I’ll once again witness the magic of Rinne and 7 MEN Samurai live in person.
