If you think you know Naniwa Danshi and their music, think again.
“Black Nightmare“ from their upcoming 9th single , Asymmetry/Black Nightmare, is a song unlike anything by Naniwa Danshi before!
“Black Nightmare” is the theme song for the Joichiro Fujiwara starring supernatural drama “Laundering”, airing every Thursday at 12:15 am (KTV) and 2:15 am (Fuji TV).
Naniwa Danshi has previously had a good number of cool and dance tracks, but this one is still slightly different from all the past releases. The usual cute and sparkling Naniwa is nowhere to be seen.
Combining the themes of nightmares and game, “Black Nightmare” is a mysterious track that builds on suspense as you keep listening to it! The highlight of the song and the music video being the almost chant-like lyrics of the chorus with the repetitions of the words DADA BABA, paired with incredibly fast-paced choreography.
The center for “Black Nightmare,” Joichiro Fujiwara said, “With things like the repeating words in the chorus, it’s a song that will stay in the minds of the listeners. I think for Naniwa Danshi as well, this is a very new kind of song.”
When asked about things that left an impression on the members during the shooting of the music video, almost everyone mentioned the dance. This time, the music video includes choreography with intense footwork that is, without any doubt, very pleasing to watch. While the choreography is hard, Kazuya Ohashi wishes for everyone to try doing the dance at least once!
Aside from the dance itself, the music video has a very dark and moody atmosphere. It also includes mysterious solo scenes of every member, which adds to the overall suspense of the song. The mysterious elements include Kyohei Takahashi’s huge necktie, Kento Nagao with missing legs, Daigo Nishihata being surrounded by ducks, and so much more.
Nothing makes sense, yet it does. All the out-of-place elements of the music video instantly intrigued the viewers so much, it already has every Nanifam out there discussing potential theories surrounding the theme of nightmares and games. Some fans were already theorizing just from the teaser alone!
A popular theory being every member represents a certain type of nightmare, and everyone together being a part of a bigger game. Perhaps a death game? Who knows? We can only discuss and guess “Who’s gonna win this game”.
The outfits this time, like always, fit very well with the dark theme of the song. Naniwa Danshi appears in the music video in two different outfits, both with a monotonous color scheme. One is a semi-formal, matte, satin black with lots of silver chain accessories, another in white, outfits that are rather flowy, strappy, and streetwear-like with lots of belts.
Every member wore a different type of outfit that compliments their style. The styling with both outfits are so well done, the unique visual features of every member really stood out! The makeup done this time is especially commendable. Check out Naniwa Danshi’s recent Instagram posts for a closer look at the makeup! While a group of fans were busy discussing the theories, another group was mesmerized by the crazy good visuals of the members. Naniwa Danshi is truly a group of visuals.
