When “GENTO” Met KENTO: SB19 and Kento Nakajima Unite at Summer Sonic 2026

A social-media encounter between two of Asia’s most distinctive pop acts has now become a genuine festival collaboration.

Filipino group SB19 welcomed Japanese singer and actor Kento Nakajima onto the Pacific Stage at Summer Sonic Tokyo on August 15, where they premiered a specially arranged version of the group’s international hit: “GENTO feat. Kento Nakajima.”

The surprise performance took place during SB19’s first-ever appearance at the festival. Kento did more than join the existing song, however. He contributed new lyrics of his own, adding a Japanese section to a track originally built around Tagalog and English wordplay.

The collaboration can be traced back to SB19’s visit to Japan in 2025, when the group filmed a “GENTO with Kento Nakajima” TikTok together with Kento. The simple connection between the song’s title and his first name made the meeting immediately memorable, but what began as a playful social-media moment ultimately developed into something far more substantial.

One year later, both artists were included in the lineup for the same day and stage at Summer Sonic Tokyo. During SB19’s set, Kento appeared as their special guest and transformed the earlier “GENTO meets KENTO” idea into an actual musical collaboration.

According to Japanese reporting, “GENTO” is currently SB19’s most-streamed song in Japan, making it a natural bridge between the group and the audience they were meeting at Summer Sonic.

Released in 2023, “GENTO” became one of the defining songs of SB19’s career. Written by group leader PABLO, the track uses the difficult process of mining and refining gold as a metaphor for growth: valuable achievements are not simply found but created through sustained work, pressure, and determination.

For the Summer Sonic version, Kento wrote a new Japanese passage rather than simply performing one of the original members’ parts.

He admitted that adding lyrics to such an important SB19 song came with considerable pressure. The members, however, encouraged him to approach it in his usual way. That reassurance allowed him to fill the new section with the ideas that came naturally to him.

“Please pay attention to the fateful meeting between GENTO and KENTO,” Kento said, completing the invitation with a characteristically playful request for listeners to let the collaboration make their hearts skip a beat. The background video flashes between the words “GENTO” and “KENTO” as well, a detail many have deeply appreciated.

It is a small pun, but one that reflects why this crossover works so well. Kento did not enter SB19’s performance as an unrelated celebrity guest. His own lyrics and performance style became part of a new version created specifically for the occasion.

SB19 described Kento as someone who embodied the meaning of “GENTO” both as an artist and as a person. When considering how to communicate the song and its message to a Japanese audience, the group wanted to work with an artist capable of representing those same values.

The Summer Sonic performance demonstrated what can happen when artists combine their individual strengths and how music across borders builds bridges between cultures.

That sense of mutual respect is what makes “GENTO feat. Kento Nakajima” more interesting than a conventional festival cameo. SB19 did not alter its identity to enter the Japanese market, nor was Kento simply placed beside the group for recognition. Instead, the performance allowed the song’s original Filipino identity to remain at its centre while creating space for a new Japanese voice.

It also introduced two large but largely separate audiences to one another. SB19 has played an important role in bringing P-pop to listeners beyond the Philippines, while Kento has continued to expand his individual musical identity since beginning his solo career.

Summer Sonic offered neutral ground where those paths could meet before a broader festival audience.

The result was a performance that felt both spontaneous and carefully considered: a viral encounter turned into an original arrangement, complete with new lyrics and a clearer connection between the Philippine and Japanese music scenes.

Notably, the collaboration also carries added cultural resonance given Kento’s Filipino heritage, which he has publicly acknowledged in past interviews, including confirming that he is half-Filipino during an interaction with actress Liza Soberano at a fashion event in New York. This personal background adds another layer of meaning to his participation in a Filipino-led global performance, further highlighting Kento’s desire to connect globally.
